On January 1, Mark Yurick began settling into his new role at the Association as Coordinator, Professional Development (PD). He was appointed to the position by Provincial Executive Council last November to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Michael Podlosky.
Yurick will coordinate the work of 14 staff members who have major responsibilities in curriculum; student evaluation; teacher education and certification; diversity, equity and human rights; teachers’ conventions; specialist councils; professional development field services; and the development of workshops, seminars and courses.
Yurick joined the Association as an executive staff officer in the PD program area in 2006. His work with faculties of education and with government officials on teacher education, certification and teacher workforce issues has earned him high regard by his colleagues and
Association members.
Prior to joining the Association, he held positions as teacher, counsellor, curriculum coordinator and principal with Edmonton School District No. 7. Yurick also served as a field experience associate for the University of Alberta, in which position he provided input into the teacher
preparation program.
Throughout his teaching career, Yurick was actively involved in his profession, serving as a PD facilitator, acting as a member of several ATA committees, representing the ATA on Alberta Education’s Principal Quality Standard Stakeholder Advisory Committee and serving on the executive of the Greater Edmonton Teachers’ Convention Association.
He holds a bachelor of physical education, a master of education and a doctorate in education, all from the University of Alberta.
The Association’s Professional Development program area helps teachers establish and maintain high standards of individual and collective practice. It is also responsible for the Teacher Qualifications Service, teachers’ conventions and specialist councils.
